Craft Fair Wedding Photos

This last weekend, Simply Wood Rings participated in a local Chicago craft fair called Ravenswood Remix. It featured artists that use recycled, re-purposed and found materials in their work. So we fit right in! We had  fun telling fair-goers about how we use materials salvaged from xylophone keys, broken baseball bats, pieces off the family barn, locally fallen trees... and also materials that the customers send in that are meaningful to them. Materials that have a real sense of time and place. People really connected with it.

They also really enjoyed our Pop-up Fauxtobooth, where they (very unofficially) were able to tie the knot! Couples, families, and friends got hitched in veils, mustaches, and top hats. It was a blast! Thanks to Oriana of Okrfoto for being our wedding photographer! See all the photos on our facebook page.

In Stock's Rock!

We have some beautiful, unique, and already available rings in stock! Wedding season has officially begun, and the inquiries are flying in for unique wooden wedding rings. We handcraft every ring, and intentionally choose materials and designs that go well together. It takes time to be so precise as we pour love into each ring we make! That's why we like to make "in stock" rings in our free time. So when customers come to us with their wedding only a couple weeks off,* we usually have a few unique rings to show them in their size. We understand that wedding planning can get hectic, but the ring is the strongest symbol of your love. Don't get caught last minute without a ring! Gustav featured in Metalsmith Magazine

Gustav Reyes was honored to be featured in the June issue of Metalsmith Magazine. Metal working is an ancient form of creating jewelry and a time honored tradition. Having Gustav and Simply Wood Rings featured in Metalsmith is a testament to how far green wedding design has come in jewelry. There is now more acceptance of this niche market in traditional mediums. The young people are driving the trends of this country, and to see our niche become more popular is reassuring of the values of the up and coming.

Metalsmith magazine highlights Gustav's modernist approach and ethical sensibility in an in-depth profile by Andrea DiNoto.

This article was first published in Metalsmith, the art journal from the Society of North American Goldsmiths, the association for artists, jewelers, designers and metalsmiths. www.snagmetalsmith.org

Salvaged Rose Wood Ring

The rosewood that we incorporate into our wood rings was salvaged from a local Chicago man who had barrels of it in his garage. He had worked for a company that made xylophones out of rosewood. The thing about making xylophones is that you have to cut the wood to the right dimensions, then test it to see if it will make the proper note it was intended to make. If it didn't make the right note, the wood was scrapped. This particular gentleman couldn't stand to see such a beautiful wood tossed into the trash. So he took it home, and it sat very well preserved in his garage until Gustav bought it from him. Rosewood is now an endangered species. Other folks can't buy this rosewood anywhere. This rarity is what makes people want it even more, let alone the fact that it is a gorgeous, rich-hued wood. We still have these materials that have already been harvested from the earth, and are now disregarded as scraps, ready to be tossed in landfills. Instead of looking for new shiny materials, or trees to cut down fresh, we want to face forward. We can draw out the beauty of this wood that was saved from the landfills. Rosewood has been harvested to near extinction. All we have is what we've salvaged from other people's harvests, and we are able to take this unwanted material, and give it the status of precious, rare, sought after. This rosewood will one day find its way back to the earth; we hope to give it a noble life until then. Simply Wood Rings
